Phillip Seymour Hoffman Report

After a far too long hiatus, I return to my blog. I could blame my not posting on work (which I do) or class (which I do attend), but in all honesty my lack of posting has been caused entirely by extreme lethargy, a symptom I have been suffering for far too long.

Fear not fair readers, I am not only still working on my movie, my self and the team have a few things on the back burner which will make this long silence well worth it. Unfortunately, I can only tease you with that little tid bit at this point, so you will have to suffer in silence.

In the mean time, I would like to comment on the title of this post. Unless you are in my head (and it is entirely possible that you are) you have no idea what I mean when I say Philip Seymour Hoffman In this case I am indeed talking about the acting legend Phillip Seymour Hoffman (well, maybe legend is a stretch, but it works in the context).

The point is the guy is good.

I started Thursday by watching Capote. This potrait of a homosexual man in the 1950's chronicles the writing of his last and darkest novel. The story revolves around Truman Capote's emotional relationship with the killer of a small town family, when Capote tasks himself with writing about the repercussions of this murder on the town. The movie takes a turn as story master, Capote, meets the cold blooded killers of a mother, father, and two children.

The film is dark and gritty, not in a "Mean streets of New York" way and in more of a "This town has a dark side" way. The film contains establishing shots that are so solitary and isolating that you may want to watch this film alone. The stark visuals may just make you weep, but the biggest thing to note is the performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman. From the promotional shots, a person with no knowledge of Capote would assume that he was a powerful, macho, alcoholic. You would have had the alcoholic part right. In the film Capote is completely ifminiant, right down to his airy voice, which takes a while to grow on you. Although the character is not a hard one for Philip Seymour Hoffman fans to imagine him playing, it still takes you out of the element when you remember him in The Big Lebowski.

Which neatly takes me to the second movie I saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman in this week. I'll give you a hint, its The Big Lebowski. In this fun romp around Los Angeles, we follow Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski as he smokes his way to the center of a kidnapping scandal. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the stuffy assistant to the alledged billionair, Jeffrey Lebowski, don't let the names fool you... They are very different people.

The point is... I love the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman. HELL! I will just come out and say it... I LOVE PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN. At least in the same way I love Mat Damon and sandwiches... mhmmm sandwiches.

well, it looks like I am off to eat. Until next week... FOOD!
